Gum health and hygiene

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. You can have the best teeth in Hampshire, but if the gum and bone supporting them are compromised, everything is at risk. Hygiene is not an add-on here: it is award-winning, and it is central to everything we do.

About gum health

Hygiene that actually makes a difference

What happens at your appointment

Every hygiene appointment starts with a proper gum health assessment, tracking the health of the structures around your teeth over time. We then remove the calculus and plaque your toothbrush cannot reach, and finish with advice tailored to what is actually happening in your mouth. Sometimes that is a technique adjustment, sometimes a different interdental method, sometimes reassurance that you are doing fine. No generic lectures.

Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy is the protocol our hygiene team follows: the biofilm is first made visible with a disclosing agent, then removed with warm water and a gentle, non-contact air-and-powder stream rather than scraping. It removes built-up plaque and stain thoroughly, with far less vibration and sensitivity than conventional cleaning. Guided Biofilm Therapy is £99.95; a Restart appointment, an extended catch-up if it has been a while, is £189.95.

Periodontal therapy

Gum disease is very common, affecting around half of adults in some form, and it is more connected to general health than most people realise. Early gum disease, gingivitis, is reversible with professional treatment and better home care. More advanced disease, periodontitis, needs more intensive management, but it is manageable. If we find signs of either we will explain clearly what we have found, what it means and what we recommend. A periodontal assessment is £139.95.

Meet the hygiene team

Cherrish Collins and Laurian Wilson are the people you will see. Cherrish leads the Clear preventive programme and is an award-winning hygienist, recognised for her commitment to preventive care and gum health. Both take genuine pride in understanding your mouth and giving advice that works for your life. They see existing patients and new hygiene-only patients alike; for most people every six months is right, and more often if you have active gum disease.

I had a chip tooth once and Clear Dentistry sorted me out within 40 hours I got to see the dentist and yeah they were superbly supportive it was fixed in the flash and you could hardly tell. I think for me going to visit a dentist or a doctor or anything of this sort of ilk. It's clean, people are professional, they're happy, potentially you could receive some bad news in a place like this but it doesn't ever feel like you're going to know so I think that's a really nice thing that they do here. The thing with my teeth staining is that it builds up over time it's something that I can't avoid really other than giving up my mind which I'm not prepared to do. So yeah every year I come along for a polish and it's paying for it, it's excellent stuff and really friendly. I mean even to the point where I went and got the reception of the day I had an iPad to fill in my details. I mean the technology just seems to have moved on leaps and bounds since the previous dentist practice I went to. The major thing for me is interaction with the dentist themselves you're actually shown this is what's happening and that's enabled me to make some really easy decisions about what I want to do with my teeth.

“Every year I come along for a polish. It's excellent stuff, and really friendly.”

James has a chipped tooth fixed within 48 hours, and comes back every year for a polish. He describes being shown what is happening, which made his decisions easy.

Common questions

What's the difference between a hygiene appointment and a check-up?

A check-up diagnoses the overall state of your oral health; a hygiene appointment treats and maintains it. Our hygienists carry out a full gum assessment, professional cleaning to remove hardened tartar, plaque and staining, and give tailored advice on your home routine, which goes well beyond a standard scale and polish.

My gums bleed when I brush. Should I worry?

Bleeding gums are one of the most common signs of gum disease, and worth getting checked. Early gum disease is reversible with professional treatment and the right home care. Our hygienists will look at what is actually happening and give you specific, practical advice.

How often should I see a hygienist?

For most patients, every six months. If you have active gum disease or a history of periodontal problems, more frequent visits may be recommended. Our hygienists see new hygiene-only patients too, so you do not need to be registered here first.

Can gum disease affect my general health?

Research increasingly links periodontal disease to conditions including heart disease, diabetes and complications in pregnancy. We take gum health seriously because the evidence says we should. If we find signs of gum disease we will explain what we have found and what we recommend.
